Upper School

Grades 5 to 8

Career Exploration Electives

Trimesterly (3 electives/year)

Art – Textiles

This art class will be a concentration in one specific medium. Textiles are an inevitable part of our everyday lives, surrounding us in various forms and serving diverse purposes. From the clothes we wear to the upholstery in our homes, they play an important role in society. Students will learn from community innovators in the industry and weave their own products using various textile resources.

Music – Conduction

This is an instrumental composition class through the use of technology. Students will have access to a special Conduction Education license in which they will be able to compose musical pieces. Their pieces will then be sent off to professionally trained musicians who produce and play the music on video for the students to see their creation come to life! Our goal is to obtain a grant to pay for a year-end culminating project where student compositions are played live, in concert, by local musicians.

Government

MACS middle school students who are interested in holding office and are elected as student officials will be charged with managing a wide range of events, activities, programs, policies, and initiatives around school as part of the student government. They will serve as the school leaders and mentors to the MACS Lower School (K-4) government officials. Students will commit to this course for the entire school year.

STEM

This course focuses on STEM-related subjects, i.e. a lesson that has a science, technology, engineering and/or math element. This is a hands-on, project-based class where the lessons will be focused on both enhancing students’ analytical and creative problem-solving skills, while encouraging them to be inquisitive, creative, and analytical. A curiosity and love for science and math is required!

Community Outreach

Community outreach in schools, or service learning, combines course content and learning pedagogies with real-world service. The intent of this class is to help students learn in real world contexts and develop skills of community engagement. Students will learn about significant needs within their community and research and provide opportunities to address the identified needs.

Finance 101

In this course, students will progress from being financially literate to financially capable! Students will learn about financial topics such as earning money, saving/investing money, planning for emergencies, and budgeting. At the end of the trimester, students will participate in a culminating project where they are tasked with designing a budget for housing, food, recreation, and more within the confines of a specific salary range for a chosen profession.

Business 101

Shark Tank anyone? In this course, students will learn that ideas have the power to turn into revolutionary tools that help us save time, money, or provide entertainment. Students will embark on an entrepreneurship challenge to identify a problem that needs to be solved and devise a plan for a new product that would solve the problem. The product may be completely original or it may be an improvement to a current product or service. Their task is to design a prototype for a new product/service, write a proposal to receive funding for the business, and pitch their idea to a panel of judges.

Sustainability

In this course, students will be introduced to concepts of environmental sustainability, beginning with a focus on water and why clean water is vital to our global community. Students will then examine United Nations sustainability goals and explore the connection between this worldwide vision and local efforts.
