Kindergarten to Grade 4

Annual Implementation Timeline

Lower School Micro Program

All Students

From September through November, students in grades K-4 who are not actively participating in one of the events from the column to the left will participate daily in the “Micro Adventures” academy lessons taught by their homeroom teachers in their classrooms. These lessons cover topics such as government, economics, and citizenship.

Elections are Held!

All students in grades K-4 may vote in the general election. Primaries are held for elections where there are more than two candidates running.

September

Some students participate in:

Campaigning 101

  • Open to any 2nd-4th grader interested
  • 1-week course
  • Students who complete the course may run for an elected government of ice, such as:
    • Mayor (4th grade only)
    • Deputy Mayor (3rd or 4th grade)
    • Representative
  •  

Law School

  • Open to any 3rd-4th grader interested
  • 1-week course with final Bar Exam
  • Students who pass the Bar Exam may apply for positions within the Court system, such as:
    • Judge
    • Peer Mediator
    • Court Clerk

October - November

Some students participate in:

Management 101
  • Open to any 4th grader interested
  • 2nd and 3rd graders may participate based on teacher recommendation
  • 2-week course with final assessment

Business Proposals

  • 4th graders holding the Management certification may submit a business proposal
  • Typically four or five proposals are approved to open in the Marketplace

January - May

By January, all ventures, agencies, and nonprofits will be up and running! For the remainder of the school year, this is what a typical week looks like:

Mondays: Planning Days

  • Owners and managers lead business meetings for their employees
  • Department heads report out with data from the previous week
  • Employees plan and/or produce

Tuesdays/Wednesdays/Thursdays: Action Days

  • Ventures, agencies, and nonprofits are open for business
  • Each student typically has one Action Day per week that is their “day off” to be the consumer or take care of personal business

Fridays: Reflection Days / Manager Meetings

  • Owners and managers meet to complete important monthly paperwork and analyze their data/financials
  • Other students stay in their homerooms to reflect on Micro-related topics

June

All Students

Students who have saved enough Micro Dollars during the year can purchase a ticket to Micro Vacation, which will be held at the end of the school year!

Some Students

Managers and Owners of each venture, agency, and nonprofit submit their Annual Reports to the government and to MACS administration. Several are chosen to formally present their reports to a panel consisting of school administrators, board members, and community partners.

Susannah Williams

Mrs. Williams was born and raised in Dallas, TX. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education from the University of Dallas and a Master of Education degree in School Leadership from New England College. After developing and teaching an English program in China, Mrs. Williams returned to Texas where she taught 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade as well as elementary art in the Dallas and Austin public school districts. She also taught at the Boston Renaissance Charter Public School from 2007 to 2012 where she headed the Parent Workshop Committee and piloted curriculum in several subject areas. Mrs. Williams currently lives in Nashua with her husband and son. She is passionate about her work in education and is excited to serve as School Principal at MicroSociety Academy!
