Special Education Paraprofessional Job Description
Summary: Responsible for assisting teachers with instructing elementary students in a MicroSociety Charter School according to prescribed individualized education plan (IEP) for each student. Contribute ideas to lesson plans, administer praise and constructive criticism, instruct students individually or in groups according to IEP on subjects such as science, literature, and math, and help create a well-rounded, comprehensive instructional program integrated with MicroSociety.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Special Education Paraprofessional will assist classroom teachers and school staff with delivering instruction according to prescribed individualized education plan (IEP) for each student:
- Helping create instructional resources for use in the classroom and MicroSociety agencies and ventures
- Delivering instructional activities according to IEP for each student
- Creating a positive educational climate in which students can learn
- Helping teachers meet grade-level and school-wide student performance goals
- Participating in ongoing appropriate training sessions when asked
- Assisting with instruction of lessons that integrate MicroSociety concepts into NH Common Core
- Assist grading papers and performing other record-keeping duties as needed for students being serviced by IEP
- Supervising students in absence of teacher, if needed, in the classroom, lunch, recess and MicroSociety ventures and agencies
- Demonstrate respect for the diverse educational, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds of the students served
- Demonstrate ability to utilize instructional technology & resources
- Show willingness to ensure personal & professional development growth
- Tutor students with diverse needs on an individual and group basis according to student IEP
- Manage student behavior in various school settings by invoking approved disciplinary procedures
- Perform other related duties as requested by teacher and Head of School to address student(s) IEP
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education or related field preferred
- New Hampshire Paraprofessional Certification 1 or 2 preferred
- Demonstrated experience instructing or working with students of various abilities and special needs
- Demonstrate effective interpersonal skills to work with adults and children
- Commit to the success of MACS students and mission, and be willing to collaborate with faculty as a member of a dynamic instructional team
- Assist teacher to the very best of their ability with all tasks that help meet students’ needs under prescribed Individualized Education Plans (IEPs)
- As a prerequisite for hiring must submit to a Criminal Background Records and Fingerprinting Check and a physical
- This position is contractually funded with funds reimbursed from sending district to pay the SpEd paraprofessional on an hourly basis for delivering prescribed service to a student or students with special education needs as delineated in the student’s Individualized Education Plan. In event there are changes in an IEP, it is understood that the hours of service and student placement at MACS may be subject to change or termination
